What would you use to test a gas to see if it was water vapour?

I would probably test it as a liquid using a pH test to see if it comes up as pH 7 (neutral, which is what pure water should be). To do this, though, try trapping the gas in a jar and with the lid on, put that jar in ice until it all condenses, then pH test the condensation. :)

i think its lime water but am not sure

it might be hydrogen carbonate indicator or cobalt chloride paper or maybe even universal indicator paper .

The use of a dehydrated salt would work..

E.g get some anhydrous copper sulfate (white) if the gas is water it will re hydrate the copper salt and turn it blue

you blow into a glass of lime water and you will see weather or not it has carbon dioxide: a precipitate of CaCO3 is a positive conformation on the presence of carbon dioxide.
