It all happened in 1956 -
In July 1956 the independently owned Suez Canal was seized and nationalised by President Nasser of Egypt. They also blocked the Canal and Strait of Tiran to Israeli shipping. Almost 3 months of tense negotiation took place with Nasser refusing to give way and causing Britain and France to plan for a takeover of the Canal Zone. The Israelis, who had been subject to many raids by Egyptian sponsored terrorists, and were concerned by Egypt's large purchases of tanks and military aircraft from Russia, were ready to join Britain and France.
In late October after 3 months of inaction, Israel invaded Sinai with tanks and paratroops in an effort to open the Canal and overthrow Nasser. Britain and France followed within days, landing paratroops and Commandos all round the northern end of the Canal Zone and defeating the Egyptian forces. Within a few days the UN interrupted, demanding Britain, France and Israel to cease fighting and the Egyptians to re-open the Canal.
