In the 1700s by the English and Dutch (Afrikaners and Boers)
1652 The Dutch arrive
1688 The French Huguenots
1820 The British Settlers
Throughout this period to well into the early 1900 s immigrants from all over the world arrive with notable pockets of German,Scandinavian and Portuguese. The Afrikaans speaking (mainly Dutch) stock continue to dominate and played an increasing dominant role as British power was eroded.
South Africa was never colonised entirely at once. That is the present day South Africa underwent many colonisations within its different regions. The Dutch inhabited Cape Town from 1652. The British took control in 1806 making it a British colony. Thereafter the Dutch trekked further north and established "Boer Republics". The British followed and took control of the republics after subsequent wars. The British developed the Natal colony. After the second war between the British and Dutch (Anglo-Boer war), the Union of South Africa was formed which included the entire present day South Africa. It was formed in 1910, but was still controlled from Britain as a British Dominion. South Africa only truly gained independence in 1931. However it was declared a Republic in 1961. So the period between 1652 and 1961 can be seen as the colonial period of South Africa.
