Harriet Tubman escaped slavery in 1849, but returned to Maryland to help her family and other escaping slaves. She worked on the "underground railroad," a network of anti-slavery sympathizers who smuggled escapees to the North and then to Canada. She later assisted the Union Army during the Civil War.
