Originally, in 1947 when area codes were first used, Minnesota had only two area codes: 612 and 218. Area code 507 was created in 1954. Area code 320 was created in 1996. Area code 651 was created in 1998, and area codes 952 and 763 were created simultaneously in 2000.

Area code 908 split from area code 201 in 1991, becoming the third area code in New Jersey.

Its 1975
Area code 917 was created in 1992. Originally, area code 917 was going to be only for cell phones, and all cell phones in area codes 212 and 718 (at the time, the only two area codes for New York City) were changed to 917. However, the FCC decided that "service-specific" area codes were a bad idea. Thus, there are now some cellular numbers in 212 and 718, as well as the other NYC area codes, and there are now some landline numbers in 917.

Until 1997, all of Arkansas was area code 501. In 1997, 870 split from 501, serving a broad swath including Pine Bluff, Texarkana, West Memphis, Jonesboro, Batesville, Harrison, and Arkadelphia. In 2002, area code 479 split from 501, serving northwestern Arkansas, including Fort Smith and Fayetteville. Area code 327 was announced as an overlay for 870, but it has been postponed indefinitely, probably to around 2018.
