Saladin took Jerusalem in the Second Crusade, specifically in October of 1187. In the Third Crusade, Saladin started off in control of Jerusalem and Richard the Lionheart abandoned his marches on Jerusalem upon signing the Treaty of Jaffa. As a result, Saladin never lost control of Jerusalem during the Third Crusade and never had to retake it.
Saladin reconquered Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187 C.E.. He lost it to the Mamluks in 1250 C.E.

The Pope thought it was unrighteous if the city that Jesus died and roses again was controlled by people of a completely different religion. So he called a Crusade to take the city of Jerusalem
Pope Urban II had a lot of power and wanted to show this power off. He wanted to take off the holy lands, so he called for the people to answer God's call which was to take over the holy lands. He said that the people who faught and died during this crusade would have their sins forgiven by God. This was very influential because the church was very important to the people during this time. Life on earth was not important and the only use for it was to get to heaven. The people were therefore eager to fight. The peasants did not fare well, however. After many deaths of the peasants, a second group of knights traveled to the holy lands and faced a well prepared Muslim army. After much fighting, the knights eventually won and gained control of four cities in the holy land.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Church, itself, had very little to do with the Third Crusade, other than as a source of inspiration for the Kings involved. The Third Crusade was known as the Kings' Crusade, as it put an end to the war between France and England when their Kings united to take back Jerusalem from the Muslim forces.
