South Vietnam NEEDED help each year. The problem NEVER got better. It just grew and grew.
In 1947, USA president Harry S. Truman came up with a Doctrine (the Truman Doctrine). It declared the the USA will help any country fight and break free from Communism. Therefore, one the Communist North Vietnam invaded the anticommunist South Vietnam, the USA had to get involved and 'help' the South. The Americans feared the if Vietnam will turn communist, the communism will spread with the Domino effect to the rest of Asia. It resulted in USA loosing the war BIG TIME.
After the U.S. evacuated the American embassy in Saigon, North Vietnam which had already taken over much of South Vietnam invaded Saigon. They met little resistance. The war continued into the 1980s. The South Vietnamese were left under equipped and poorly trained. South Vietnam was united with North Vietnam. Only this time it was a communist country. Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Mihn City after the North's late leader, Ho Chi Mihn
