California was not bought from Mexico but was part of The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that was signed on February 2, 1848 after Mexico was defeated. The US received a large amount of land and Mexico received $15 million dollars at that time (about $400 million today). In fact the treaty even avoids mentioning the states and simply redefines the new boarders.
