they didn't...
They broke up in 1990 just after their 'Appetite For Destruction' album. A great album. but Slash (the guitarist) is doing a solo career and frequently does singles with other artists.

No; they never 'broke up'. The 'classic Guns' period is generally cited as being 86-90; the band remained steady except for the addition of Dizzy Reed on keyboards and the substitution of Matt Sorum for Steven Adler on drums. In 90, Izzy Stradlin left soon after Use Your Illusions was released, which spelled the beginning of the end. Guns managed to get a covers album out before the revolving door started following the gradual departures of Slash, Duff and Sorum. Those three are currently in Velvet Revolver, with Slash guesting on albums and Duff touring with his solo project, Loaded.

in 1994..gilby clarke left gnr. and was replaced by Paul Tobias. slash was mad when his guitar was louder than his on a song.

after years went by, slash drifted in an out of the band, also working on his side project, slash's snakepit. in 1996, the original band members went to the studio, even though McKagan and Sorum were simultaneously touring with their side project Neurotic Outsiders In 1996 and 1997 Slash, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan all left the band for good.

Axl is still in the band.

Guns N' Roses broke up gradually. Members left at different times. The first member to leave was drummer Steven Adler. He did not leave voluntarily, but was fired for continual drug and alcohol abuse. His replacement was former Cult drummer, Matt Sorum. The next member to leave was rythym guitarist Izzy Stradlin (born Jeffrey Isbell). He left voluntarily in 1991, because he grew tired of Axl's crap. His replacement was Gilby Clarke. Lead guitarist Slash left in 1996 after years of disagreements with Axl. Bassist Duff McKagan left shortly after for the same reason.
