1984. The first movie with a PG-13 rating was RED DAWN (with Patrick Swayze) released on 8/10/84. 5 days later DREAMSCAPE (with Dennis Quaid & Christopher Plummer) and WOMAN IN RED (with Gene Wilder and Kelly LeBrock) were also released with a PG-13 rating giving them a tie for 2nd place in the race to be the 1st PG-13 movies. The 2 movies most responsible for the PG-13 rating are GREMLINS and Indiana Jones AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM. Parents complained that these movies were too violent for a PG rating (especially after taking their young children to a movie they thought was kid-friendly) and studios argued that they were not violent enuf to warrant an R rating. Thus the PG-13 compromise was born. Pirates of the Caribbean was the first movie released with the DISNEY name on it that had a PG-13 rating. It was felt that to sanitize it down to a PG rating would have detracted from the overall quality of the film.

Jack Mr ValentiMPAA president and the MPAA on July 1, 1984, introduced the PG-13 rating, allowing in children under 13 years of age without a parent or an adult guardian, but warning parents about potentially shocking violence, cursing, and mature subject matter that may be inappropriate for children under 13; though weaker than an R rating, PG-13 is the strongest unrestricted rating. The first widely-distributed PG-13 movie was Red Dawn (1984), followed by Dreamscape (1984), and The Flamingo Kid (1984), although The Flamingo Kid was the first film so rated by the board

The "PG-13" rating was introduced in 1984. Prior to that, there was no rating between PG and R. The rating was created in response to complaints about some PG films (notably Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) being too graphic. Since they weren't graphic enough to warrant an R, it was decided the solution was to have a rating halfway between PG and R.

There was criticism that films such as "Poltergeist", "Gremlins", and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" were too violent and gory to be rated 'PG'. In response, the Motion Picture Association of America created 'PG-13' for films that were too violent for 'PG' but not adult enough for 'R'.

Red Dawn (1984) was the first PG-13 movie to be seen in theaters. However, The Flamingo Kid (1984) was the first movie to receive the PG-13 rating. The Flamingo Kid was not released until after Red Dawn.

The U.S. release date for Red Dawn was August 10, 1984. Release dates for other countries can be viewed at the Related Link below.
