The uneasy history of Italy is punctuated by the Unification of 1861 and the installation of Victor Immanuel as King of Italy. Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882 ), a naturalized U.S. citizen is usually credited with having accomplished this unification, but he went on to have more uneasy Italian history of his own, heading two unsuccessful rebellions against Rome.
