The reformation did not have a particular date or year...in a way it happened gradually...Martin Luther was the trigger and kind of pushed the refomation to finalisation. If you had to put on a year on it...it would be in 1517! Thanks! :) The reformation did not have a particular date or year...in a way it happened gradually...Martin Luther was the trigger and kind of pushed the refomation to finalisation. In all honesty, the Church has been constantly reforming itself ever since the beginning. In the book of Acts there is a call for the Church to change direction and even St. Peter is called to account by St. Paul. There followed twenty-one Church councils through the next twenty centuries which have been a constant call to reform. In the twenty-first century, when people ask about the "reformation of the church" they are mostly referring to the Catholic reform of the 16th century centered at the Council of Trent, which ran from (from the Catholic Encyclopedia):
The nineteenth ecumenical council opened at Trent on 13 December, 1545, and closed there on 4 December, 1563. Its main object was the definitive determination of the of the Church in answer to the heresies of the Protestants; a further object was the execution of a thorough reform of the inner life of the Church by removing the numerous abuses that had developed in it.

Reformation, also called Protestant Reformation.
The Church Reformation led to the beginning of new orders, such as the Company of St. Ursula that focused on educating girls. It also prompted an update to Church doctrines, how the Church was run, and the Council of Trent.
