Why? Because people needed a way to store electricity. The battery was invented around 2,000 years ago if you believe the Baghdad battery discovered in 1936 was a real battery. The Voltaic battery was invented in 1780. The Rechargeable Lead Acid Automobile Battery we use today was invented in 1859.
i think they invented batteries because back then people did not have electricity and they needed some kind of elecricity that would power things and that would be helpful for light and that would be helpful for things that needed to be powered for electricity jessica lampmer 3rd grade

The electric battery invented was invented in 1839 and was set to be improved dramatically in the year of 1842. This made the battery at longer lasting and stronger.

- in 1888 Carl Gassner modified the Leclanche cell by substituting a damp paste electrolyte to create the first dry cell
- in 1896 the dry cell was first manufactured and sold commercially by National Carbon Company (known today as Energizer)
- in 1939 Rayovac first began selling their fully steel jacketed leak-proof dry cell
- in 1942 Rayovac won a patent infringement lawsuit for their fully steel jacketed leak-proof dry cell (US patent 2,198,423 issued in 1940)
- in 1959 the first alkaline dry cell was introduced by EverReady (known today as Energizer)
- in the early 1960s the first "inside-out" dry cells were developed, switching the zinc that corroded away from a cup on the outside to a finned rod in the center, combined with the leak-proof steel jacket this made leaks virtually impossible; this construction is now standard in both conventional and alkaline dry cells and can probably be considered the first truly modern day battery
