He flew a Navy fighter jet, an F-9F Panther, on ground attack missions from June 1951 to June 1952. On September 3, 1951, he had to eject after enemy fire caused him to hit a pole and lose part of a wing. He was safely recovered and eventually completed 78 missions, most of them in January, 1952.

Yes. Armstrong began studying aeronautical engineering at Purdue University the age of 17. His tuition was paid for under the Holloway Plan which would pay for 2 years in college followed by 3 years of service in the US Navy. He was called into the Navy on January 26, 1949. He flew 78 missions during the Korean War, mostly as an escort fighter protecting reconnaisance planes. Following the war, Armstrong returned to Purdue, where he received his BS degree in 1955. After he landed on the moon, Armstrong earned his Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1970. After obtaining his MS degree, he began teaching Aerospace Engineering at the University of Cincinnatti.

HIs love of flying came at an early age. He received his pilot's license before he could drive a car.
