When sciatica is diagnosed by an MD a prescription for muscle relaxers, inflammation reducers (and/or) pain medication may be prescribed but these will not "cure" sciatic pain. The first step is to get an accurate diagnosis from an MD, DO or a chiropractor. That person will recommend the right course of treatment for your case.
Most cases of sciatica are mild to moderate and will resolve on their own within about 3 months. For people whose sciatica is severe, or is not going away after 3 months, very few treatments have been found to be effective. So far, the most effective treatments seem to be spinal manipulation (eg: chiropractic) and surgery. See the evidence below:
Systematic reviews of sciatica treatments say:
- Physical therapy (exercise) is not effective for the treatment of sciatica (ref 1).
- Medications (eg: NSAIDs, analgesics, or muscle relaxants) are not effective for treating sciatica (ref 2 & 3).
- Spinal manipulation might be effective for the treatment of sciatica (ref 4).
- Elective surgery such as microdiscectomy might be effective for patients with sciatica (ref 5).
