CLAW
lobsters
Lobsters tend to be aggressive even towards themselves. If one lobster grabs the claw of another, the latter can escape by releasing its arm from its socket.
The chitinous covered "claw" on a decapod (lobsters and crayfish)
Lobsters have two unequal, specialized claws, a cutter claw for tearing food and a crusher claw for crushing it up.
They have two types of claw one for crushing and one for cutting. The crushing claw is very stong and can crack a mussel shell, and the mussel can be eaten.
The main danger from lobsters is from their claws. The claws of lobsters are very powerful, and can easily break a finger or even an arm if you are handling a large lobster. Care should be used whenever handling clawed lobsters. Although the muscles used to close the claw are very strong, the muscles used to open the claw are quite weak. So a tight rubber band around the claws of lobsters is enough to keep them closed and makes for much safer handling of live lobsters.
Lobsters ( Homarus americanus) have two claws. One is a crusher claw which it uses to open shellfish such as clams and muscles to get at the tender meat inside. The other claw is a feeder claw or pincher which is more manoeuvrable and it brings the food to its mouth this way. Lobsters can also just feed by positioning its mouth close to its food which is how damaged ( clawless) lobsters can continue to eat. Spiney lobsters (Panulirus argus) do not have either the crusher or the feeder claw yet they eat well.
