∙ 16y agoIn the NFL, that would have been 1933. The NFL had only one division between 1920-1932 and whichever team had the highest winning percentage at the end of the season was crowned champion. In 1933, the NFL split teams into two divisions and instituted a championship game to determine the league champion. In the first championship game in 1933, the Chicago Bears defeated the New York Giants 23-21.
In the 1932 season, there was a tie for the championship and the NFL scheduled a playoff game to determine who would be the league champion. In that game, the Chicago Bears defeated the Portsmouth Spartans (now the Detroit Lions) 9-0.

∙ 9y agoThe very first pro football game in the United States was in 1892. The Alleghany Athletic Association played the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. A more organized schedule of pro football came about in 1920.

∙ 13y agoFootball was first played on Ivy League campuses as far back as the 1820s, but it was a kicking game more like soccer. It wasn't until the 1870s that the game began to take its current shape, after a standardized set of rules was agreed upon, borrowing from the English Rugby code. The game as we know it evolved over the next 40 years, with key innovations such as the line of scrimmage, the down-and-distance system, and the legalization of the forward pass.
The game that's today considered the first intercollegiate football match happened in 1869, between Rutgers and Princeton, although that game would have looked a lot more like soccer than the game we know today.
