When the US became independent from the UK, it became its own country. Since it was a new country, it needed to form a new government and constitution. The Articles of Confederation were then created. However, this constitution didn't last long and the founding fathers got back together to create a new constitution. And thus the Constitution was created, which to this day is recognized as one of the most flawless, influential, and powerful pieces of government framework in the world. In order to become a state of the Union, the state had to of ratified the Constitution. So Massachusetts and all the other former colonies ratified this document, thus becoming a state.
