The USSR demanded the withdrawal of all allies military forces in East Germany. The Berlin Wall went up dividing Berlin and blocking shipping from West Germany into Berlin. The allied airlifted food and medical supplies to West Berlin.

Right near the end of the war with Germany, the Russian army slipped into part of Berlin, thinking that this would be a real prize for them. They were thwarted by the Allies, so they simply surrounded Berlin to prevent food and supplies from getting to its people. So the Allies, largely the US, started the Berlin airlift to fly food and supplies in to Berlin's people.

We gave food and supplies to West (west, or east, i think its west) Berlin. Since Germany banned us from going in and driving supplies to them, we decided to get creative and start airlifting the supplies to them. This was of course, to keep W. Berlin from falling to Communism, which the other half of Germany was. Oh yeah, and the Berlin wall was put up, so people could not go to the W. Berlin area (coming from E. Berlin), however you could go to E. Berlin (coming from W. Berlin).
President Truman started sending planes filled with supplies in the summer of 1948.Planes flew none stop to the for almost a year sending Berlin food and water as well as supplies during the cold winters. The Berlin Airlift made more than 200,000 flights for eleven months until the Soviets lifted the blockade on Berlin in May of 1949.

Stalin started the Berlin Blockade in 1948 as a first step in a plan to pull West Germany into the Soviet sphere of influence. He expected West Berlin to eventually begin accepting supplies from Soviet East Germany, effectively bringing all of Berlin under Soviet control. He believed that if he could control Berlin, West Germany would soon follow.
The people helped West Berlin by sending airlifts in 1948.
