Ferrets are small, weasel-like animals. In the wild, the are brown with a white undercoat with a cute black-masked face and other markings along those colors. Domesticated ferrets typically come in three varieties:
. Those that look just like their wild cousins, as above described.
. Those that look more like ermines: White, often long-furred, with a black or grey tinged neck and tipped tail.
. Ferrets that look like a mix in between the two, generally more like the later description: White, with a brown tinge around their neck and other features of the black-footed ferrets.
All ferrets have black beady eyes (unless injured or likewise), and usually possess cute, slightly wet pink noses.
At birth, newborn baby ferrets also known as kits are born blind (eyes are closed), deaf and almost fur less and are totally dependent on their mother for about the first three weeks, and weigh from five to fifteen grams, length about 2".
Baby ferrets are born with a covering of very fine white hair, fur starts to appear within five to seven days. Those that will be albinos or black-eyed whites remain white, while all other colors turn gray at five or six days of age with a good covering of fur by four or five weeks. White markings can be distinguished but it is impossible to tell what color the kit will be until it is over three weeks old. The baby ferret will develop it's hearing and open it's eyes in about twenty-two to thirty-six days after birth.
Baby ferret weight at weaning (8 weeks) 300 grams to 500 grams (about 1 pound). Ferrets have thirty baby and thirty-four adult teeth. All baby teeth should be in by three months, and lost by nine months of age. from another contributor:
* It is actually possible to distinguish what color baby ferrets are going to be as early as ten days old.
They do so in a similar fashion to almost any other mammal. Both male and female must be unfixed and sexually mature (which occurs at approximately 6 months of age). You must have a male ready for mating season at the same time your female is in heat. Following a successful mating and impregnation, a ferret litter will remain in gestation for about six weeks. At the end of her pregnancy, a mother will give birth to 7 to 8 live kits.
A ferrets' appearance is that of a long thin furry body. They're smaller than cats, but larger that guinea pigs usually. They are like a cross between a mouse and cat. They are similar to weasels and otters.
They are small, cute, and fluffy. Don't get me started on meercats anf=d their cuteness! :P
Just like a miniture adult. Unlike many other rodents they're born with fur, with their eyes open and they can walk and hop perfectly fine.
