Indicators change color when acid/alkalies are in use. One such substance is phenolphthalein and also litmus paper.

There are other substances such as rose petals, beet root, tea etc.

Such as Boiled Cabbage ( the juice) blue lithmus paper (stays blue if a base, turns red if acid) red lithmus paper (stays red if acid, turns blue if a base)
