Generally (when acid reacts with hydroxide base) a salt & water is formed.

However other bases give other products than water.

Examples: (base + acid --> ?? + salt)

  • Ammonia: NH3 + H+Cl- --> NH4+Cl- , ammonium chloride
  • Sodium bicarbonate: Na+HCO3- + H+Cl- --> H2O + CO2,gas + Na+Cl-, sodium chloride
  • Sodium acetate: Na+(CH3COO)- + H(COOH) --> CH3COOH + Na+(COO)-, sodium formate
