When an atom gains an electron it becomes more negatively charged. If it was previously neutral, it becomes an ion with a -1 charge. If it was previously an ion with a +1 charge, then it becomes a neutral atom. Else, ion-1 + 1e- = ion-2.

What happens when a atom gains an electron?

When an atom gains an electron it becomes an ion with a charge of negative one. This charge comes from the electron's negativity, which changes the atom's balanced ratio of electrons to protons.
