AnswerCaptain America, aka Steve Rogers, was so vehemently against the SuperHuman Registration Act supported by Tony Stark that he turned against the government. Eventually, Cap decided to surrender to the pro-Registration forces, also known as the government. While on the steps of Capitol Hill, Crossbones, a subordinate of the Red Skull, fired a shot at Rogers. However, he was not the one who actually killed Cap. Sharon Carter, Cap's former lover and the woman who was carrying and recently had his child, under mind control from Dr. Faustus and the Red Skull, fired the two fatal shots into Cap's chest at point-blank range. He said he was, by his own admission to a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative, eighty-five (See Civil War: The Confession)
