The biggest mistake most people make is putting it on before starting to cook. It should not be put on the meat before grilling. The sugar in most of them will burn and leave you with black and charred outside and raw inside. Wait until the last 5 minutes to put it on the meat.

If you add the sauce before cooking the ribs, you will want to cook them at a lower temperature, too.

Most barbecue sauces contain a lot of sugar. You do not want to burn the sugars.

I make my own BBQ sauce I don't use Sugar I use Honey which works wonders on taste. The best way to cook ribs is to do Oven Then Grill them to finish off The best time to put the sauce on is right before you are going to serve then off the grill The sauce needs to marbleize on the ribs for that down home southern taste!

I would prefer AFTER you bake it ...but, some people prefer BEFORE you bake it... it really doesn't matter.
