Actually, you shouldn't hold it at all, or else you can get your scent on it and the mother will abandon it. However, if it has already been left or it is domesticated and you need to hold it it should be cupped in your hands.

Well do you mean a wild one? If you do than just leave it alone but if you have all ready touched it than the mom will still come and feed it but ..... I wouldn't touch it.if you are talking about a domesticated bird than .... no. They are just little thing and could catch a virus that can come from your hands. But if you must than WASH YOUR HAND with hot hot hot water and soap and do not I repeat do not dry your hands with a towel. Towels carry bacteria and so just use a paper towel or let them air dry. Then you may hold the bird.

you can start trying to hold your budgie after a week 2 weeks after you have got it. if it will not sit on your budgie then do not start chasing it around the cadge.
