The chemical energy stored in the coal is converted into heat energy for space heating or to drive an engine.

Coal contains carbon that mostly came from the atmosphere via the process of photosynthesis by vegetation using the Sun's energy to break down carbon dioxide in the air into carbon and oxygen. When those chemical bonds are reformed in the burning process, that solar energy is released and carbon dioxide is re-formed.
