Based on biblical genealogies and other clues in The Bible,.Bishop Ussher calculated that Adam was created in 4004 BCE. The Book of Genesis then says that Adam lived for 930 years, meaning that he died 3074 BCE or around the time the Bronze Age began.
However, there is something strange about the lifespan of Adam, not merely the improbable age he is supposed to have lived to, but also that he and the other main characters in the Book of Genesis all lived to ages which contain patterns based on the number 17. If we look at the Bible's first five generations, we see:
Name ...... Lifespan ... Pattern
Adam ....... 930 ........ 7x9 + 51x17 [3x17x17]
Seth ......... 912 ........ 5x9 + 51x17
Enos ........ 905 ......... 8x9 + 49x17
Cainan .....910 ......... 6x10 + 50x17
Mahalalel 895 ......... 5x9 + 50x17
These patterns show that the lifespans can only have been assigned based on numerology, not actual history. Scholars say that Adam was not a real, historical person, but even if he was we could never say when he died.
One answer:
Adam was created 6,033 years ago. How this is figured is through the geneological records of the generations as is seen at Luke 3:23-38 and also other parts of the bible.
Another answer:
Bishop Ussher did use biblical genealogies and, where necessary, other biblical dates to calculate the exact date of the creation of Adam and Eve in 4004 BCE - some 6015 years ago. Since Ussher's time, there has been considerable scholarship in new areas of Bible study, and this raises troubling issues regarding the biblical dates.
We start from the year of the death of King Solomon, which the Bible gives as approximately 928 BCE. The Bible says that Solomon ruled for 40 years and that the fourth year of his reign was 480 years from the Exodus from Egypt. We then have 430 years in Egypt. Prior to this, the Bible tells us exactly how long each ancestor lived and when the son was born who would continue the line down to the present. So far so good.
The problems start with the reign of Solomon - exactly 40 years, as also was the reign of David. In fact, the periods associated with each of the major judges who preceded the monarchy are also multiples of 20, as is the period of 40 years when the Israelites wandered in the wilderness. These periods were clearly chosen to be easy for the story-tellers to remember as epic accounts were passed down orally from generation to generation. And so were the values of 480 years and 4 years from which the start of the Exodus was measured. This demonstrates that, regardless of how historically true the stories are otherwise, the time from the Exodus to the reign of Solomon is unknown and unknowable.
We can continue back through the sojourn in Egypt. This is given as 430 years in Exodus 12:40, but as 400 years in Genesis 15:13 and only three generations in Genesis 15:16. Thus, the time spent in Egypt is the second period the length of which is unknowable.
We can then look at the lengths of each generation that proceeded. As we go back in time, the ancestors lived for increasingly impressive ages, but also remained celibate for astonishingly long times. Although each generation is measured by the age at which each father had a son, it is also instructive to look at the lifespans attributed to each person.
If we look, for example, at the lifespans of the Hebrew patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Bible says that:
These lifespans are clearly artificial and were arrived at by the use of numerology. All we can learn form this is that, even if the patriarchs really did live, they did not live to such great ages. And so it is for each succeeding generation. For example, the first five persons in the biblical genealogy (Cain and Abel were not included):
Name/Lifespan/Pattern
Adam/930/7x9 + 51x17
Seth/912/5x9 + 51x17
Enos/905/8x9 + 49x17
Cainan/910/6x10 + 50x17
Mahalalel/895/5x9 + 50x17
From this analysis, it is clear that we can not say from the Bible how long ago Adam and Eve lived. Perhaps we can best leave it with Leon R. Kass (The Beginning of Wisdom: Reading Genesis) to tell us the real answer, "We can learn most from the story [of Adam and Eve] by regarding it as a mythical yet realistic portrait of permanent truths about our humanity, rather than as a historical yet idealised portrait of a blissful existence we once enjoyed but lost."
According to the Bible, Adam was born in the year 3760 BC, and died in the year 2830 BC at the age of 930.
Adam lived 930 years, having sons and daughters. During that time he saw at least eight generations of his descendants. (Genesis 5:3-32)
This was in 4004BC (according to the Bible dating of Bishop Ussher).
930 years. Genesis 5:5"So all the days of Adam that he lived amounted to nine hundred and thirty years and he died."
