Who is Andrea Amati?

Andrea Amati was a stringed instrument maker in the 16th century (1530's). He was an Italian man who had two sons. He is considered by most historians to be the designer of what we call the violin family of instruments. He made a group of instructional for King Charles IX with decorations such as paintings, carvings, and mottoes for the king.

Andrea Amati never made cellos. The cello as we might recognise it wasn't developed until the final few decades of the 17th century and not widespread until around 1700 or so. Amati made various kinds of violas da gamba and bass violins (tuned differently from a cello and different in size too). The instruments around today that people claim to be Amati cellos are gambas or bass violins with completely different necks, pegboxes, bridges, fingerboards and tailpieces than in the days of Amati. Moreover, these so-called 'Amati' cellos were cut down (the fronts and backs) in order to accomodate the later idea of a cello.
