Atheism has always existed and therefore predates any invention of gods of any kind. In earliest times the thought of gods had not yet permeated the human mind. The term would have been meaningless. To an atheist's point of view the term atheist is irrelevant now too. The term is simply used by religious people who think that they are the correct people in that they think gods exist and they need a word to distinguish themselves from those who do not think about gods at all.
After all, all human beings are born atheists, without any knowledge of a divine being.
The word itself originated in Ancient Greece around the 5th century, but atheism predates any religion. Atheism did not need a label until churches, gods, and religions became so common place that to NOT believe in any of the gods was now seen as unique.
Atheism originated everywhere there were people. Atheism is the natural state into which we are born. Most scientists feel the very first humans ever to walk the earth lived in Africa, the homeland for all humanity, so that would be "where" atheism originated, too.
Most believers inherit the god their parents believed in. This is usually easier to do with children who have not yet reached the age of reason, or, with adults who are lonely and vulnerable.
Atheism exists all over the globe, and in increasing numbers, as more and more people begin to realize, "We don't need a god to be good people. We don't need a god to use as an answer to things we don't understand anymore."
Polytheism, the worship of more than one god, is considered the earliest formal religion. Polytheism goes back so far into antiquity, with origins in more than one region of the world, that it is not possible to establish just where and when it was really founded.
AnswerActually with decoding of ancient texts since the time of the Rosetta stone, people have been able to translate Egyptian hieroglyphics to the greek language. It appears this dilema with language posed the primary barrier to decoding the past. Egyptian polytheism is very old, about 3500 BC. There primary gods weres Osiris, and Isis which have many connections and similarities to other gods in the Middle East such as Bel,Baal, marduk, mars, God of War,Nimrod, Orpheus and Dionysus ; the Queen of Heaven, Semiramis,Ashtoreth, Ishtar (from which we get Easter). These stories all contain a link to the biblical story of Tower of Babel. Nimrod a pejorative name meaning rebel, formed the first world government. He demanded the people rely on his provisions. He instituted the worship of nature and astrology at the tower of babel. According to Greek"the father of history:,Herodotus mentions the tower of babel in his work "the Histories."He also mentions the peculiar pratices of worship such as beastiality. Goats being some of the animals worshiped are symbolic later in the mysteries rites of satanism. In closing Polytheism really gained authority with the "Queen of Heaven" who is later know as Semiramis, Isis, Ishtar, Asatarte, Aphrodite, and Venus. She was the wife of the first king in The Bible known as Nimrod and continued has work of building. He his on the dollar bill in the form of an eye watching over the unfinished tower. The great architect of the universe. For Christians polytheism is the begining of Satanism and the mystery religions of the pre-flood world.polytheism
