Atheism has always existed and therefore predates any invention of gods of any kind. In earliest times the thought of gods had not yet permeated the human mind. The term would have been meaningless. To an atheist's point of view the term atheist is irrelevant now too. The term is simply used by religious people who think that they are the correct people in that they think gods exist and they need a word to distinguish themselves from those who do not think about gods at all.

After all, all human beings are born atheists, without any knowledge of a divine being.

The word itself originated in Ancient Greece around the 5th century, but atheism predates any religion. Atheism did not need a label until churches, gods, and religions became so common place that to NOT believe in any of the gods was now seen as unique.

Atheism originated everywhere there were people. Atheism is the natural state into which we are born. Most scientists feel the very first humans ever to walk the earth lived in Africa, the homeland for all humanity, so that would be "where" atheism originated, too.

Most believers inherit the god their parents believed in. This is usually easier to do with children who have not yet reached the age of reason, or, with adults who are lonely and vulnerable.

Atheism exists all over the globe, and in increasing numbers, as more and more people begin to realize, "We don't need a god to be good people. We don't need a god to use as an answer to things we don't understand anymore."
