Why is Auburn University named Auburn?

Upon entering college in1949 everyone called the college Auburn.
It was just too much to say Alabama Polytechnic Institute or even
write it on a check. Besides just spelling Polytechnic was a chore
so if the official name was used at all it was shortened to
API.
At that time, it was as if the city of Auburn was named after
the school. At football games the cheer leaders would lead with the
yell: AU -- BU -- RN and the stadium would join in Auburn, Auburn,
Auburn. There was only one college at the time. That other school
was called a University.

In what year did auburn university open?

Auburn University was established in 1856 as the East Alabama
Male College, 20 years after the city of Auburn's founding. In
1872, under the Morrill Act, the school became the first land-grant
college in the South and was renamed the Agricultural and
Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1899 the name again was changed,
to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Finally, in 1960 the name of
the school was changed to Auburn University, a title more in
keeping with its location, and expressing the varied academic
programs and larger curriculum of a major university.

If your College becomes a University can you change your diploma to say University instead of College?

It depends on whether your college has become
a university before or after you graduated, whether the name of
college is different from the name of the university and if the
name change took place less than ten years ago (Example: Maryland's
Villa Julie College became Stevenson
University in 2008). If you want to, for example, list your
education on a resume, and the name of the school changed
after you graduated, one option is to put down the original
name of the school at the time of your graduation and in
parentheses, "now known as [new/current name of school]". Another
way to do this is to put down the current name of the school and
put in parentheses, "formerly known as [previous name of
school]".
