Austria was originally a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Before the first world war, it was known as Austria-Hungary, and was one of the most powerful empires in Europe. The Treaty of Versailles of 1919 that ended WWI broke up Austria-Hungary into many smaller nations, and Austria was one of these.
