Guru Nanak became guru because, he believed in one god and that Muslims and Hindus should not be separated and should be united instead. He went missing for 3 days at the age of 30 and was found that he was on the lake talking to god. God gave him the role in life to be a guru. His first words when he came out of the river were: 'god is neither Muslim or hindu' and that is how guru Nanak became guru.

After his three-day disappearance in the river, people assumed that Nanak had died. However, he reemerged from the river claiming he did not believe in Hinduism and Islam, but would abide in the ways of God. Immediately, the people acknowledged him as a Guru, and he founded Sikhism.

Guru Nanak became guru because at the time, he felt there were many things wrong, like the Caste System for example, and he thought that he should make a religion or belief of his own that he could rule and make life fair with. This then created Sikhism and he of course became the leader (Guru).

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the first Guru or Teacher of Sikhs. Nine other human ones followed, and the eleventh one is the Sikh Holy Book for we are commanded to follow it and not any human Gurus or any other Holy Book.

I guess you could say Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the first founder, but he wasn't the only founder. Sikhism developed under the guidance of ten human Gurus for nearly two centuries. The analogy used by Guru Nanak Dev when he gave the Guruship to the second Sikh Guru or Guru Angad Dev was that he was passing his light on as one candle lights another. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, however, right from the beginning did give Sikhism a lot of its major principles and distinguished it as a new creed.

For instance, even in what is now Istanbul, Turkey a monument has been found dedicated to Guru Nanak by a Moslem ruler that calls him "the Lord of the times." Guru Nanak Dev Ji had many new revolutionary ideas for the times and especially for India. For instance, though born into a Hindu family, he spoke against the caste system at the age of nine and refused to wear a thread showing high caste at the ceremony his parents arranged for him to put on this thread. He also spoke up for women and said they were not inferior. He also said that it does not matter to God what religion anyone is for God only judges by deeds not by religious membership. In addition, he had a different idea about the cosmos from the other faiths. He did not believe there was a set number of planets as the Hindus and Moslems did but said there are uncountable planets above and below the earth and uncountable skies and suns. He also refused to believe the Hindu and Moslem accounts of creation and said creation was a mystery that only the Creator knows about. He was quite revolutionary in his thinking and it was clear to all that met him that he started something new.
