Why were epics and fables so important to the ancient Greeks?
What were two epics written by Homer and what were they about?
Why did Homer write stories?
homer wrote his epics to spread the word of the events. his epics such as the odyssey snd the ilad are good books i recomend reading them. The historical legends of the Trojan War and Odysseus' homecoming had been passed on through the oral tradition of ancient Greek culture well before Homer's version of the epics became definitive. Story-telling of this type served many purposes, such as explaining historical events, glorifying the state, spreading cultural and political power, and entertainment.

Why is Virgil called the Homer of Rome?
Some people admire him for writing epics in the style of the Homeric epics. However it was anachronistic to write in a style of 700 years earlier. Imagine someone writing plays in the style and language of Shakespeare today - he would be laughed at for using outdated and modes of expression and speech. Shakespeare is good, but times and styles have changed, and aping those of the past is ridiculous. The same applies to Virgil aping Homer.

When did literature start?
Literature started as soon as people learned to write. However, the first works of literature in Western Tradition actually predate writing. The Iliad and The Odyssey are both oral epics composed by Homer around 850 BCE. The Greeks developed writing between 650 and 600 BCE, and one of the first things they did, after writing down their laws and legal contracts, was to write down those epics.
