Ireland's head of government is called a Taoiseach, not a Prime Minister. There has never been a female Taoiseach. The head of state is the President. Ireland has had two female presidents, first Mary Robinson (1990 - 1997) and then Mary McAleese (1997 - 2011).

Mary Robinson, who was elected in 1990. She served for one 7 year term and was succeeded by Mary McAleese, who is now in her second term, which will finish in 2011. There will then have to be a new president.

The title used in Ireland for a head of government is a Taoiseach, not a a prime minister. Ireland has never had a woman as Taoiseach. The head of state is known as the president, which is different from the Taoiseach. Ireland has had two women as president. The first woman to become president of Ireland was Mary Robinson, in 1990. In 1997 she was succeeded by Mary McAleese who served until November 2011. Michael D. Higgins became president in November 2011.
