Technically, he never ruled Spain. Ferdinand was the King of Aragon, while his wife, Isabella, was the Queen of Castile. These two kingdoms together formed what we know as Spain. They never shared power, however, each keeping sovereignty of their kingdoms for themselves, so, they were correct know as Their Most Catholic Majesties
which means that together they ruled Spain, but different parts of it. WhenIsabella died, Ferdinand was merely regent of Castile, which means he looked after it until his and Isabella's daughter Juana was old enough to rule on her own.
