Mary Queen of Scots never became Queen of England. Mary became Queen of Scotland after her father the King of Scotland died. Her great grandmother was Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII of England, who had married the King of Scotland. Margarets brother Henry VIII was King of England. (The one with the six wives) His three children Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth each died childless. It was during Elizabeths long reign that Mary tried to become Queen of England, She was thrown off her throne in Scotland in favour of her infant son James. When Elizabeth Tudor had Mary imprisoned because of her attempts to overthrow her, Mary tried even harder but was later executed. As Elizabeth had no children when she died she passed the throne to her cousin James, King of Scotland who became King of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland which was later changed to Great Britain/ United Kingdom.

She became Queen of Scotland upon the death of her father, James V, at midnight December 14, 1542. However, she was not crowned until September 9, 1542. Upon the death of Henry II of France on July 10, 1559, she technically became Queen Consort of France. However, she was not crowned prior to the death of her husband, Francis II.
