Maria Goretti came from a very poor family. When her father died, her mother moved the family in with friends in the country where they helped on the farm. One day, when Maria was but 11 years of age, Maria was assigned to do household chores and take care of the baby. The 18 year old son of the farmer came back to the house and attempted to rape Maria. However, she fought him off and kept screaming that it was a sin. The boy then stabbed her numerous times resulting in her death the following day but not before forgiving her attacker. She was declared a martyr to purity and canonized a saint by Pope Pius XII.
