Edmund Hillary reached the summit of Mount Everest at 11.30am on the 29th May 1953. He was a member of the British Mount Everest Expedition. He became the first person to stand on the summit of the highest mountain in the world along with Tenzing Norgay, who was just behind Edmund.

∙ 12y agoHillary officially summited on 29 May 1953 - George Mallory was seen ' Going Strong for the Summit ' with Sandy Irvine in June 1924 by Neil Odell who positioned them above the second step (around mid day) - but both were never seen alive again - with no absolute proof of reaching the summit - Mallorys preseved body was found some years ago (1999 I think) - but still no evidence of the summit - There is a film on the subject ' The Wildest Dream ' and loads of info on the WWW and also many books - there is currently a search for the body of Sandy Irvine in progress on Everest hoping to find the camera - with the ' proof' shot - opinion is split 50/50 to whether they summited!
