How did Winnipeg general strike start?

The Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 was one of the most influential strikes in Canadian history. It resulted in much improved working conditions for millions of Canadians.J.S. Woodsworth, a strike leader who was briefly imprisoned, would go on to found Canada's first socialist political party, the Co-operativeCommonwelth Federation, which was he forerunner of the New Democratic Party. After World War I many Canadian soldiers returned home to find few opportunities, all the while companies had enjoyed enormous profits on war contracts. Wages and working conditions were dismal and labour regulations were mostly non-existent.

It was important because before the strike there was no such thing as a minimum wage and people were getting paid very little and couldn't afford anything. If someone complained they would just fire the person and hire someone else. Because of the strike people have to be paid fairly and many workplaces have benefits because of it.

There were already a series of strikes that had taken place throughout other Canadian regions, and the success of the 1917 Russian Revolution also inspired labour unrest. Generally, revolutionary industrial unionism was a force throughout the Western world at the time; the catalyst event was a general strike called by the Winnipeg Trades and Labour Council. Other unions, in a display of worker-class solidarity, followed suit.
