Frank Winfield (F.W.) Woolworth opened his first store in Utica, New York on February 22, 1878; but it was not successful. However, the following year, on June 21, 1879, he opened a store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and it was much more popular. This success quickly led to the opening of a second Pennsylvania store, in Harrisburg, on June 21, 1879; it too did very well, and led to more Woolworth stores opening.
Woolworth's was founded by Frank Winfield Woolworth. His first store in Utica NY was a failure, but he ultimately opened his first successful store in Lancaster PA.

F. W. Woolworth Company, usually just referred to as Woolworth's, was founded in New York City in 1897. The company went out of business in 1997. There are still retail chains in other countries using the Woolworth name. These countries are Austria, Mexico, South Africa, and Germany.
