India formally became an independent nation, no longer subject to British rule, in August of 1947. Despite achieving independence, India continued (and still continues) to serve as a voluntary member of the Commonwealth of Nations, comprised mostly of former British territories and dominions.

1947, on 15th August, when the last British Viceroy Earl Mountbatten handed over power to India's first Prime Minister, Pundit Nehru. However, soon after this, violence flared between the Hindu and Muslim populations, with hundreds of thousands being slaughtered on both sides in an internal conflict that lasted well over a year.

It took until 1948 for the last British troops to be brought home from India, and it was particularly hard for them to witness the slaughter, as India was no longer under British rule and they could do nothing to intervene to prevent the violence. It eventually led to the creation of Pakistan as a seperate nation for the Muslims of what had been the Indian Empire.
