In 1827, Switzerland's Rudolphe Töpffer created a comic strip and continued on to publish seven graphic novels. In 1837, "The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck" was published by Rudolphe Töpffer and it is considered the earliest known comic book.

The modern comic book as we know it today emerged in the 1930s and gained popularity in the following decades, especially with the creation of iconic characters like Superman and Batman.

Personally, I started at age 13, but there are some people who don't start reading comics until well into adulthood. There are also some who have been reading comics since they learned how to read.
