When they started making the first movies.
Star Wars started out as a comic, and sold over 2 million copies in just the US on just the first day out. After this, George Lucas wanted to make Star Wars into a book. After doing this, Star Wars (the book) sold over 14 million copies in just the US on just the first day. After doing this, George Lucas' friend said "wouldn't it be funny if they made Star Wars into a film?" Lucas was then inspired by this, and did not think of this as a joke, but as a duty, to make Star Wars into a film. Lucas then wrote a script play of Star Wars episode I, A New Hope, episode II The Empire Strikes Back, and episode III, Return of the Jedi all in the year of 1968. Lucas then picked out the best actors o that time, and selected them to be in his Star Wars films. After all three were out in cinemas, Lucas made a total of over billion dollars. Lucas, in 1985, then wrote another three Star Wars Movies, setting them before episode I II, and III. Making episodes I II, III into IV V and VI. And after 16 years of putting the new film together, made episode I II and III. Ending in a result of 6 Star Wars movies. Also, resulting with a world wide number, a sum of 8 billion dollars in total of the whole Star Wars saga put together. Lucas is now looking into making all 6 Star Wars ilms into 3D. And is also looking into making 3 more Star Wars films, set after episode VI.
Because IV-VI (4-6) are often called the "Origional Trilogy" George Lucas thought of that idea first, and made I-III (1-3) later to tell the story of what happened beore episodes 4-6. 4-6 would be sort of incomplete without 1-3. George Lucas wrote all six episodes at once. when deciding which one to make first he went with episode IV because it was by far the cheapest and easiest to make. Addition by SJ Commander: While that may be part of the reason, another reason was that George Lucas wanted to make Episode I first, but he decided against making it because he wanted to make the giant, sprawling metropolis Coruscant as good and realistic as possible, and the CGI techniques and matching programs and computers weren't there yet. So he decided against messing with his grand vision and made Episode IV first because it required less grandiose CGI techniques.
