He wanted to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was not a tall man. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree, for Jesus was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house." So he made haste and came down, and received Jesus with joy. But when some saw this, they complained, saying, "He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner."

He heard that Jesus was passing through the town; since Jesus was a well-known teacher, Zacchaeus wanted to be able to watch Him as He passed by. Unfortunately, Zacchaeus was a small man and was unable to see Jesus through the crowd, so he ran ahead and climbed up a sycamore tree. As Jesus walked by, He saw him in the tree and called out to him, telling him to come down and that He (Jesus) wanted to have dinner at Zacchaeus's house.
