Meip was not German. She was from Austria. When she was a young girl, her family could not afford to feed her. She was sent to Holland to live with a host family and never returned home except to visit as an adult. She almost did almost go to a camp. The arresting officer knew she had helped hid the families on the day of the arrest, but he recognized her accent and did not take her. She speaks German, Dutch, and English. If you really want to feel like you know her, read her book, Anne Frank Remembered. Amazing. You can also get a copy of the film based on the book. It won as best documentary the year it was released. This is an amazing woman.
