Religion started almost as soon as humans appearred on this earth. Religion started off as a way to explain things that could not be explained by the limited knowledge that the early people had; and example would be lightning, which meant that the god or gods were not pleased.

Answer Religion was started by the Cro-Magnons (who also started culture) about 40,000 years ago . Cro-Magnons are early Homo sapiens.

When humans finally started writing (c 3100-3500 BC) in the middle-east there was religion already. Mostly it was gods of nature i.e. sun god, moon god, wind god, etc. The Hebrews seemingly came up with the uni-god concept around 1000 to 500 BC probably in Babylon. Paul is probably responsible for the start of Christianity, he changed the Hebrew message which Jesus was preaching, but it didn't really get going until the 300's AD, well after his death.

Answer 1Religion began from the first creation of Adam. Since we existed here for reason, and by a specific Creator who didn't do it for nothing, religion has naturally begun since then.

One thing that researchers agree upon is that mankind has always believed in a Higher Power. Archaeology has shown that no ancient society ever existed that did not believe in the supernatural.

Based upon a massive worldwide study of the most ancient inscriptions and the earliest levels of civilization, Dr. Wilhelm Schmidt (in his twelve-volume Der Ursprung Der Gottesidee) concluded that the original belief was monotheistic. It was a simple belief in the Creator (Sky-Father) with no imagery of any kind. It gave way relatively quickly to polytheism and idolatry, but its traces could still be seen by the careful researcher, just as (for example) Proto-Indo European has left indelible marks within the later languages.

Answer 2IT began when primitive humans started to become intelligent. No longer were apes killing each other for bananas, but humans were looking elsewhere for answers. An experience of pure knowledge could have created religion, too. Answer 3Religion began with start of universe creation. all God creations; including earth, planets, skies, stars, plants, mankind, animals, ...) are created on the principle of surrender to God will and submission to His Mighty (that means in Arabic Islam). So, Islam religion in its general sense started by start of universe creation. All God prophets since Adam through Noah, ..., Abraham, ..., Moses, ..., Jesus, and Muhammad (Peace be upon them all) called their people to Islam (or submission to God; the Creator). Islam per God Torah revelation to Moses is called Judaism. Islam per God Bible revelation to Jesus is called Christianity. Islam per Quran revelation to Muhammad ; being the last God revelation; is called the very name Islam.

The First records of any type of religious scripture or writings were by the Sumarian People who lived in the area today known as Iraq more than 10 thousand years ago. Their civilization worshiped gods from the sky who came from a different world. Their history states that the gods came and conceaved children with the women of earth, and the women had given birth to half god half human children (Simularly to the demigods of roman and greek beliefs) It is believed that the Book of Genesis is based off of the 7 tablets of creation written by the Sumarian People describing the creation of the world with simular scriptures such as "The gods took from man and gave the seed onto the women of earth, from which new life would come. in the image of god."

Religion in its true sence of the word means when man started to do repititious acts based on spiritual perception to save himself or another, and well that answer is easy.

As soon as a man relizes there is hoplessness, a man seeks his own remedy, often times without asking who what when or where.

But dear friend you mean more than just that word, you mean "God and Stuff"...

That my dear friend ever was, there was no begining, from all things came out of Him, all I can do is point you to Him. (points)

Another answer: Religion is a form of worship. It includes a system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices; these may be personal, or they may be advocated by an organization. Usually religion involves belief in God or in a number of gods; or it treats humans, objects, desires, or forces as objects of worship. Much religion is based on human study of nature; there is also revealed religion. Much of the religious practices today was started in ancient Babylon after the flood of Noah's day. From there it spread to the four corners of the earth. Professor Morris Jastrow., in his work The Religion of Babylonia and Assyria (1898, pp.669-701), says regarding this: " In the ancient world, prior to the rise of Christianity, Egypt, Persia, and Greece felt the influence of the Babylonian religion. Religious doctrines that originated in Babylon, such as the immortality of the soul, hellfire, and the worship of triune gods, are shared by virtually all religions. Jesus instituted true Christianity, a way of life based on love. In it, all thoughts and actions are to harmonize with God's will, for the purpose of bringing honor and glory to his name. (Matthew 22:37-39; Hebrews 10:7) Behind Jesus teaching on this way of life was his Father Jehovah.

There were no Christians on earth until the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit entered the disciples on that day. His entering was permanent at that time. The church and Christianity started at that time. This happened in Jerusalem 50 days after Jesus was crucified at the time of Passover.

Another answer:

The word "Christianity" isn't in the King James Version of The Bible. The term "Christians" was first used by people in the city of Antioch in reference to the disciples of Christ, and as a result of the work Paul did there [Acts 11:26].

"Christianity" is a general term coined by men, later, to label another of one of the world's many religions; in this case, one that touts the name of Christ. It's a "general term," in that there are hundreds of denominations and beliefs regarding Christ under this label, as the varied beliefs and sects of any other religion in the world.

What has come to be known in the world as "Christianity" is perhaps the very first thing about which Jesus warned His disciples:

"...the disciples came unto Him privately, saying, Tell us... what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world [age]? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many." (Matt.24:4-5 KJV)

Paul fought off many attempts of Satan to deceive and pervert the churches he was planting among the Gentiles... and he struggled with it until he died, and was "taken out of the way." Until Paul was taken out of the picture... there was no multi-denominational religion known as "Christianity"... but the struggling Gentile churches that kept Paul busy... and that inspired his letters of instruction and teaching, that would one day become the meat and potatoes of the "New Testament."

"Don't be fooled by what they say. For that Day will not come until there is a great rebellion against God [within His church] and the man of lawlessness is revealed - the one who brings destruction... And you know what is holding him back, for he can be revealed only when his time comes. For this lawlessness is ALREADY AT WORK SECRETLY, and it will remain secret until the one who is holding it back [Paul's monumental efforts in and among God's church] steps out of the way." (II Thess.2:3-7 NLTNew Living Translation)

There is no term of "Christianity" within the pages of the Bible. There is only Jesus', Paul's, and the other disciples' warnings to beware of people claiming to represent Christ... but who fail to obey and do the works of Christ:

"Pray, too, that we will be saved from wicked and evil people, for not everyone believes in the LORD. But the LORD is Faithful; He will make you strong and guard you from the evil one. And we are confident in the LORD that you are practicing the things we commanded you, and that you always will. May the LORD bring you into an ever deeper Understanding of the Love of God and the endurance that comes from Christ." (II Thess.2:4-5 NLT)

A:Religion is so ancient that we do not really know its origin. Evidence of religion is found tens of thousands of years ago in locations as far apart as Europe and Australia. Whether they rose independently to fulfil perceived spiritual needs or came from a much older common source is not known.

No one knows for sure, but my bet is that it emerged from Fear. To primitive humans, the world probably didn't make a lot of sense, and it was very dangerous. So people looked for ways to predict the future and later, to control it.

Imagining a "super-being" who was manipulating the world was Step One. (Even an evil superbeing is better than accepting the thought that the universe is random.) Finding a way to convince or compel this superbeing to act benevolently was Step Two.

And just as Astrology led to astronomy, these primitive impulses led to faith -- or rather, faiths. Human communities need to evolve to the point where they can support some members who think about faith and teach it to the rest of the tribe. Some of these people will take advantage of their tribe-mates, some will be delusional, and some will be more like philosophers, pursuing Truth for its own sake. The resulting "products" compete; that which seems best able to explain "the way things are" (and thus offer the most accurate predictions) will survive to enter the next competition.

The entire ancient world possessed the original traditions of the Creation, the existence of the human soul and the afterlife, etc.

One thing that researchers agree upon is that mankind has always believed in a Higher Power. Archaeology has shown that no ancient society ever existed that did not believe in the supernatural.(See: Can you show me that God exists?)

Based upon a massive worldwide study of the most ancient inscriptions and the earliest levels of civilization, Dr. Wilhelm Schmidt (in his twelve-volume Der Ursprung Der Gottesidee) concluded that the original belief was monotheistic; a belief in One God (see footnote 1, below). It was a simple belief in the Creator (Dyeus Pater; Sky-Father) with no imagery of any kind. It gave way relatively quickly to polytheism and idolatry, but its traces could still be seen by the careful researcher, just as (for example) Proto-Indo European has left indelible marks within the later languages. Other traditions also are traceable worldwide, such as the religious significance of the number seven, and the immortality of the soul.

The process by which the awareness of One God gave way to a belief in many gods, has been described by Scandinavian researchers (see footnote 2) as splitting ("Gottespaltung"): the people gradually viewed God's attributes of truth, righteousness, fertility etc., as separate from Him, and afterwards personified and worshiped the attributes themselves, until God was largely forgotten.

According to Jewish tradition also, (Rashi commentary, Genesis 4:26), monotheism is more ancient than polytheism. Maimonides (see footnote 3, below) describes the process by which polytheism began: "A couple of centuries after the Creation, mankind made a great mistake. They said that since God had created the stars and spheres and placed them on high, accordingly it is fitting for people to praise and glorify them and to treat them with honor. They perceived this to be the will of God, that people should magnify and honor the stars. They began to praise and glorify them with words, and prostrate themselves before them, because by doing so, they would (according to their false conception) be indirectly honoring God too."

This descent into polytheism contributed to the weakening of any sense of religious belief and was also used as justification for excessive and licentious behavior, since the caprices which were narrated concerning the idols were adopted as an excuse to imitate their putative actions. See: Cruelties of the polytheists.

It was the original belief which Abraham reinstated through his teaching of ethical monotheism.
