African slaves were brought to the American colonies beginning in 1526. They were first brought to the San Miguel de Guadalupe colony, in present-day South Carolina. The colony was unsuccessful and the Africans fled to live with Native Americans, but in 1565 the first permanent settlement of Saint Augustine in Florida had slaves.

Slavery in the Western Hemisphere dates back to the earliest European colonization in the 16th century. And in the Eastern hemisphere, slavery existed so far back in history that it would be impossible to determine when it first started. There have always been people who wanted to enslave other people.

The concept of slavery originated in Mesopotamia, prior to the rule of Sargon I(the 1st) and the epic of Gilgamesh. One became a slave because they were in economic trouble, or was a captured war prisoner. However, a person was not a slave for very long. The ideal of life-as-a-slave had not been created until much later, there is no exact dates.
