The British colony of Rhodesia became the independent nation of Zimbabwe on April 18, 1980. Rev. Canaan Banana was the first President and Head of State (a non-executive position), and Robert Mugabe was the first Prime Minister and Head of Government (and had political control of the country). (In 1988, the country abolished the position of Prime Minister and made the President the nation's chief executive. Mugabe became President at that time, and has held the position to this day (as of April 2010).)

Both Kenya & Zimbabwe (Formerly Southern Rhodesia) were part of the British Empire. Both Egypt & Sudan were British protectorates within the British Empire. Keyna is a member of the Commonwealth, but I think Zimbabwe is probably now suspended in these troubled times.

There have been a few different Self-governing colonies in the British Empire. One that comes to mind is Southern Rhodesia, known today as Zimbabwe.
The 50 plus countries that were originally part of the British Empire, started to become independent from the late 1940's onwards and then became known as the British Commonwealth. That term is now obsolete and they are now known as the Commonwealth of Nations.
