∙ 12y ago- Some of the extermination camps, such as Treblinka, were demolished and grassed over by the Nazis.
- A section of Dachau has been preserved and has become a major museum.
- Sections of Auschwitz I and II have been preserved and became a small museum in 1947. In the meantime, it has also become a major museum of international standing, with a highly respected research department.
- A part of Buchenwald has been preserved and has a memorial (but is not considered a major museum).
- A part of Majdanek has been preserved and has become a museum.
- There are various monuments on the sites of many former camps.
They were shut down when the Germans and other powers surrendered at the end of WWII. The prisoners were given food, clothing and medical care and many of them went on to live their lives in other countries. The guards underwent trials and years of prison. Many of the concentration camps are open as museums for us all to remember what went on there.

∙ 12y agoPrisoners were forcibly moved to avoid having the Allies (& the world) find out exactly what had been going on. Those to ill or infirm were executed or merely left to die. In some cases, the SS would abandon a camp, leaving the prisoners to their fate.
After the war ended, the camps were liberated. But if they suddenly allowed the starved prisoners to eat alot, they would die, so they had to keep them under control and only slightly raise the amounts of food they intook each day.
After they became healthy, they were released back into society.
